Slow Log In window appearance after Log Out in 10.1.3?

After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.1.3, we started having a symptom we had not seen before. After selecting to Log Out, the current session closes and the blank blue screen appears. However, there is an unusually long delay before the Log In screen appears again.

A MacFixIt reader describes the same symptom. He attributed it to using DHCP with a computer (iMac) connected directly to an AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet) via an Ethernet cable. If he assigned a manual IP address (e.g., 10.0.1.4) to the iMac in Network System Preferences, he did not see the delay. Switching to DHCP instead, resulted in the delay. His Base Station is configured as a DHCP server (DHCP and NAT). [Note: As we understand it, you should not be using a manual IP if set up this way; still, this is what was reported.]

Our setup is somewhat different. We have a router with an AirPort connected to it configured as a bridge. We use manual IPs in all cases, as served from the router, not the AirPort Base Station. However, our situations are similar in that the only Mac on our network that has this delay is the one that is hard-wired to the router. The ones that actually connect through the AirPort do not show the delay.

[Note: In what may be a related symptom, we have had a similar delay, again only since updating to 10.1.3, when trying to Save documents in certain applications (primarily Quicken 2002): after the Save dialog box appears, we get the spinning beachball cursor for a minute or so before we can actually select to Save.]

Update: Several users suggest that the real culprit for the slow log out are processes that take a long time to close at logout. Several items found in the Login Items window (such as from Palm and Retrospect) were specifically sited. (Thanks especially Joshua Ochs.)

Matt Neuburg believes the problem we reported with Quicken is due to Default Folder X, which we do use. We will be checking this out later today.
