Lucent Technologies unveiled a new software packaged developed by its Bell Labs research arm that lets Internet gateways interoperate with each other and traditional circuit-switched phone networks. The software solves an incompatibility problem between various Net telephony gateways and smoothes out the process for IP-based voiced communications, according to the company. Trials for the PacketStar IP Services platform will begin this month, with general availability scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
