Short Take: Court to reconsider ruling on benefits for freelancers

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will reexamine a decision that required Microsoft to pay hundreds of temporary and freelance workers benefits, including 401K contributions and stock options. The October 1996 decision by a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court was a blow to high-tech companies, among others, which save millions of dollars in benefit costs by using temporary workers.
