Short Take: Amber Networks emerges from stealth mode

Start-up Amber Networks emerged from its self-imposed quiet period to show off new optical equipment intended for providing services on telecommunications networks. The new technology, called the ASR 2000 routing device, is scheduled for tests this summer, with general availability slated for the fourth quarter of this year. Executives said the firm will compete against Cisco Systems, Nortel Networks, the Unisphere Solutions arm of Siemens, as well as other start-ups such as CoSine Communications. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Amber was founded in October 1998 and has more than 150 employees.
