Mysterious 'Sherlock' Victorian special gets title and release date
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Holmes and Watson in "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride," to air on January 1, 2016, in the US and UK, and in select theaters worldwide.
"Sherlock" fans have been waiting excitedly to see Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson solve a mystery in fog-shrouded Victorian London. But the air date and title for the upcoming "Sherlock" Victorian special have themselves remained a mystery -- until now.
On Saturday, BBC One debuted an updated trailer, along with confirming an air date and title for the episode.
The 90-minute special will air on January 1, 2016, both on BBC One in the UK and on PBS in the US. This news comes as a sigh of relief for American fans who usually have to be extra-careful to avoid spoilers from the UK audience that gets to see "Sherlock" earlier.
The special will also get a theatrical release in select venues around the world, including China.
The one-off special set in 1890s London is titled "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride." The episode is co-written by series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
The updated trailer shows the same footage from a previous trailer of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) hunting down clues to unlock the secrets of another mystery. That trailer came out earlier this month.
We also see glimpses of Mary Morstan, also known as Mrs. Watson (played by Amanda Abbington), as well as Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs).
If that wasn't enough good news, BBC One also confirmed that series 4 of "Sherlock" will start shooting next spring. "Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are busy writing away right now," BBC One tweeted Saturday. Season 4 will take Sherlock and Watson into "deeper and darker water than ever before... The Game is on -- again!" Gatiss said of the next season earlier this year.
But for now, all we can do is watch this trailer over and over again until we finally find ourselves glued to a TV or a theater screen on January 1.
