Seth Rogen to helm film on '90s console wars

The star of "This is the End" and "The Green Hornet" will help turn the classic battle between '90s video game giants Sega and Nintendo into a cinematic thriller.

Long before Sony and Microsoft became the chief combatants in the video game console wars, Sega and Nintendo were kings of the gaming roost. Blake Harris chronicles their rivalry in the upcoming business thriller "Console Wars," which traces scrappy Sega's rebel bombardment against the Nintendo juggernaut during the 1990s. The book is scheduled for release in May.

According to Variety, the book will be adapted into a film co-directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for Sony Pictures. Rogen and Goldberg have also been tapped to write the script.

The book has all the makings of a Hollywood movie, with the likable underdog Sega going up against industry Goliath Nintendo. This was the era of classic video games like Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid, and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and Earthworm Jim.

"Console Wars" already features a foreword by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, no doubt in anticipation of the movie production. The fact that Sony Pictures is behind the project should show just how comfortable Sony is with its current place in the gaming world. It's definitely not feeling any heat from Nintendo or Sega.
