SerialSpeed 230 version 1.7 fixes crashing bug

CNET staff
Version 1.7 is the latest update to SerialSpeed 230. It fixes bugs - most notably a compatibility problem with Apple's Open Transport Serial Arbitrator and Apple's ARA Serial Arbitrator that caused crashes in a number of cases. It also improved support for AOL.

SerialSpeed 230 is a control panel that allows Power Macintosh and Quadra AV owners to use their telecommunications software at top speed, up to 115Kbps or 230Kbps, even if the applications do not provide built-in support for these high speeds. It is Mac OS 8 compatible.

Of more general relevance, the SerialSpeed press release notes: "According to Apple's technical documentation, any System Extension that attempts to open the serial ports at system startup will cause a crash if OT Serial Arbitrator (earlier than 1.1.2) or ARA Serial Arbitrator is installed. SerialSpeed 230 version 1.7 works around the problem and will not crash for users of Mac OS 7.x."
