Problems installing A number of users are reporting issues installing Security Update 2007-001, receiving error messages indicating that the update cannot be installed on their systems.

MacFixIt reader Sam writes:

"I just tried to install the downloaded new Apple "Universal" security patch onto my G5 PPC, but no can do: I get a message that my machine does not meet the requirements for installation. I'm running OS X 10.4.8, Dual 2 Ghz PPC G5, with plenty of memory."

In some cases, this issue can be resolved by creating a new user account (as described in our tutorial "Common workaround -- create a new user account" then re-attempting the update.

In other cases -- usually when the update fails part-way through and cannot be properly restarted -- deleting the following file:

  • /Library/Receipts/SecUpd2007-001Ti.pkg [note that this is the Library folder at the root level of your startup drive]

then re-attempting the update is successful.

File sharing issues Some users are reporting problems mounting volumes via SharePoints and other network-based file sharing services after applying Security Update 2007-001. This is an issue that seems unrelated to the update based on the files it modifies, but one that has been corroborated nonetheless. If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

Streaming media confusion Some users are reporting issues with default streaming media applications after the update.

Greg Leaman writes:

"After installing Security Update 2007-001, streaming Real Player .smil files are converted to QuickTime and a QuickTime player opens.

This issue is generally easily remedied by downloading an installing RCDefault (a System Preference pane) then re-choosing the appropriate application (in this case, Real Player) for opening the desired file type (.smil).

Miscellaneous issues Meanwhile users are reporting a variety of issues that are highly unlikely to have been directly caused by Security Update 2007-001, but for which we are still seeking confirmation:

MacFixIt reader Gordon writes:

"I installed the above last night (24 Jan). Now the mighty mouse does not work, although power is getting through to it. I powered down in a hurry (held down the button) after installing the update so I may have disrupted something."

Alain writes:

"The Palm Transport Monitor reports 'Unable to complete your request (-16)' error message at startup since applying this update. Seems to interfere with PDA hotsync, either through bluetooth or cable connection. I later deleted all Palm plist files in my user account preferences folder, emptied trash, restarted, working fine again."
