Purpose of 1.1 updater -- fixes Safari bug Last week Apple released a new version of Security Update 2006-002, numbered 1.1, as a replacement for the initial 1.0 release.

At the time of release, the company did not provide any details regarding enhancements in this release relative to the initial version (1.0) released earlier in the week.

Apple has now posted information indicating that Security Update 2006-002 v1.1 was released to address an issue in which Safari was not updated by v1.0 if it had been moved from its default location in the Applications folder.

We described this issue, along with various fixes, in our initial coverage of Security Update 2006-002 1.0.

Apple says:

"After you install Security Update 2006-002 v1.0, Safari might have a blank icon that won't launch Safari. This can happen if you moved Safari out of your Applications folder before installing the update. To fix it, follow these steps:"

  1. Drag the copy of Safari with the blank icon from your Applications folder to the Trash.
  2. Empty the Trash.
  3. Download the Security Update 2006-002 v1.1 for PowerPC or Intel.
  4. Install the Security Update 2006-002 v1.1 and restart

Slowness after updates Meanwhile, some users are reporting problems with overall system slowdown with both the initial 1.0 release of Security Update 2006-002 and the follow-up 1.1 release.

One reader writes:

"Shortly after I installed security update 1.0 I began experiencing severe lags on my powerbook g3 (1.33 GHz, 1.25 GB memory) running 10.4.5. Even if I was only running two relatively simple applications simultaneously, such as Firefox and TextEdit, suddenly the spinning disc icon would appear for minutes at a time and everything would be paralyzed. During this time I could hear the hard disc being accessed constantly. I definitely first noticed these problems immediately after updating and restarting. I tried re-installing the 1.1 version you had linked to (which was NOT coming up for me under Software Update when I manually checked for updates) but that seems to have only slightly  improved matters - slow downs are less pronounced and I can use 3 or 4 applications at the same time before problems begin to exponentially increase, eventually leading to horrible lagging, disk accessing for no reason. "
