Security Update 2005-002 (#2): Software Update not working; ICQ broken; more
Software Update not working A few readers have reported that they are unable to access Software Update via the Apple menu (the option is grayed-out) after applying Security Update 2005-002.
MacFixIt reader Gray Tait writes:
"Ever since installing the security update, I cannot access 'Software Update' in the Apple menu, and when I select 'About this Mac' the 'Software update' button is gray. I have to go into 'CoreServices' in the Library folder inside the System Folder to do it.
The most consistent workaround for this issue has been clearing of system caches -- a task easily accomplished with a tool like Panther Cache Cleaner.
ICQ broken A number of readers report issues with the ICQ instant messaging application after applying the latest security update.
One reader writes: "No more ICQ after installation of the latest security update. A friend has the same problem. Tried various clients but none shows any online contacts."
Pop-up, pop-unders less frequent? Over the past two weeks we've been covering an increase in the number of pop-up and pop-under ads that are able to infiltrate blocking mechanisms built into Safari and other browsers (See articles 1 and 2).
Several readers have reported a noticeable decrease in the number of infiltrating pop-up and pop-under ads in Safari after applying Security Update 2005-02. Others, however, note no change.
If you have noted a decrease, or no change in pop-up or pop-under ads after applying the most recent security update, please let us know.
