Seagate settles storage case: provides 5% cash back or backup software

Affects only drives purchased separately.

CNET staff

In order to settle a class action lawsuit alleging that the company stated that purchasers of the drives would receive approximately 7% more usable storage capacity than they actually received, Seagate is offering affected consumers "free backup and recovery software", or a cash payment equivalent to five percent of the net amount you paid for the hard drive.

This includes all drives purchased from an authorized Seagate retailer or distributor, separately as a Seagate product that was not pre-installed into and bundled with a personal computer or other electronic device between March 22, 2001 and September 26, 2007 in the United States.

In other words, if your Mac came with a Seagate drive pre-installed, you are not eligible for this settlement. If you purchased a Seagate drive separately and attached it to or installed it in your Mac during the aforementioned time-frame, ou are eligible. For further information, see the settlement page.
