Seagate has hit an industry milestone today with the announcement that it has begun shipping the world's fastest 6TB 3.5-inch hard disk drive in Australia.
Billed as an enterprise solution for corporate and cloud-based data centres, the Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD v4 offers a 50 per cent capacity increase over the last generation 4TB nearline drive. Seagate boasts that its new HDD now supports "the highest density storage per square foot in the industry".
"Unstructured data growth is doubling exponentially and will propel the digital universe to reach 16 Zettabytes of data by as early as 2017," said Scott Horn, Seagate vice president of marketing. "This will cause cloud service providers to look for innovative ways to store more within an existing footprint while lowering operational costs."
While the HDD is targeted at cloud and data centre providers, it is available through the channel for the obsessive upgrader or PC ultra-enthusiast after 6TB of storage in a single 3.5-inch drive.
The enterprise solution joins a number of recent consumer-focused releases from Seagate, including the Backup Plus Fast portable drive - a portable 4TB storage device that doubles the capacity and speed of existing external portable drives according to Seagate - and the USB 3.0-enabled Seagate Backup Plus Slim.
The Backup Plus Fast is available now for AU$409, while the Backup Plus Slim is available in 500GB (AU$99), 1TB (AU$119) and 2TB (AU$189).
