Seagate preserves Maxtor brand in sales channel
Maxtor brand is for low-end hard drives, while Seagate will be for high end.
Seagate, the hard drive maker that completed its acquisition of rival Maxtor in May, has adopted a dual-brand strategy for products sold to channel business partners, the company said this week. The Seagate brand will represent higher-end models and Maxtor the lower-end, the company said.
Seagate's desktop Barracuda and mobile Momentus drives have about twice the capacity as the Maxtor equivalents, DiamondMax and MobileMax. In addition, the Seagate models generally have larger cache memory sizes and come with five-year warranties rather than three-year warranties. The company also added new Maxtor models, including a 320GB desktop model and an 80GB mobile model.
