Mac users can enable their screens to flash for alerts that normally are relayed via sounds. This action can be activated in the Universal Access portion of System Preferences and exists to help people with hearing challenges while using a Mac. Occasionally, even though this setting is subsequently deactivated, users find that the screen continues to flash.

Setting the Universal Access command

1. To set your screen to flash when an alert sound occurs, navigate to your System Preferences and click the Universal Access button under System.
2. Select the Hearing tab and check the box to "Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs"
Solving the issue
To stop the screen flashing, go back to the Hearing Universal Access System Preferences and uncheck the box. If the screen continues to flash when an alert sound occurs:
1. Navigate to Macintosh HD, Library, Preferences
2. Delete the "com.apple.universalaccess.plist" file.
3. Log out and log back in, or restart your Mac.
