ScanWizard beta install requires Apple Guide?

CNET staff
A reader reports that although ScanWizard 5.05 is the latest release of MicroTek's scanner driver software, a beta version (5.12.1 dated November 13, 2000), is available from MicroTek's FTP site. (download directly with this link). Apparently, in order to install the beta software properly the Apple Guide extension must be enabled. Dave Kuhen writes:

"After installing 5.05 with only the Mac OS 9.0.4 base extensions enabled, launching ScanWizard terminated with a message that it couldn't find the plugin. A call to tech support suggested I download beta version 5.12.1. After uninstalling 5.05 and installing 5.12.1, launching returned an unexpected quit type 2 error. Another call to tech support suggested turning off Virtual Memory, rebuild the Desktop, and if that didn't work, a clean Mac OS install. After the clean install and installing ScanWizard 5.12.1, the scanner began to work properly. Upon further testing I determined the only problem with the original OS setup was that the Apple Guide was disabled."
