SanDisk doubles memory card capacities

New cards provide more memory for cameras, cell phones and other consumer devices.

SanDisk on Tuesday announced new flash memory cards with higher capacities, designed to fit into consumer gizmos like digital cameras, camcorders and cell phones.

Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Pro Duo and SD cards now have 4-gigabyte, 1GB and 2GB capacity, respectively, the company said. The cards, featuring MagicGate technology, have enhanced capacity, data transfer speed and security. The 2GB SD cards will let users store hundreds of high-resolution digital images, JPEG compressed video clips and many hours of digital music on a single card, the Sunnyvale, Calif., card maker said.

"These new capacity points will allow our customers who need maximum storage in their digital cameras, mobile phones and other electronics devices to use these new cards to store as many digital pictures, songs and other personal data as they desire," Nelson Chan, executive vice president of consumer and handset business at SanDisk, said in a statement.

The 4GB Stick Pro card is priced at $799.99, while the 1GB Stick Pro Duo will cost $204.99. The 2GB SD will retail at $199.99, SanDisk said. The new cards are set to ship next month.
