Samsung will ship the next generation of its 2.5-inch SSD, the 830 series, in October, the company announced today. With up to 512GB of storage and support for the latest SATA 3 interface, the new drive promises to double the speed of its predecessor, the Samsung 470.

It seems this is Samsung's answer to a slew of SATA 3-based SSDs recently released by other vendors, such as the OCZ Vertex 3, the Crucial M4, or the Plextor PX-256M2S .

The new Samsung 830 SSD will come in a brushed metal enclosure and include a copy of Norton Ghost.

Similar to the case of the OCZ Vertex 3 or the Patriot WildFire, the new Samsung 830 will also include a bracket for installing the 2.5-inch drive in a 3.5-inch bay. The SSD is bundled with a USB-to-SATA cable, similar to the adapter of a Seagate GoFlex portable drive that enables the drive to work with any computer as an external drive.

The new Samsung 830 will be available in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities. Pricing and other features will be disclosed at the drive's official launch in October. Remember to check back then for the full review.
