Samsung readies 85-inch Ultra HDTV for CES 2013
The company says the television comes with more than 8 million pixels, quadrupling the resolution in full HD displays.
The future of television technology will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
Samsung announced today that it has won 27 Consumer Electronics Show 2013 Innovation Awards, given to products that will be on display at the event in January that in some way push the technology industry forward. One of those awards -- Best of Innovation -- was awarded to an 85-inch Ultra HD set.
According to Samsung, the 85-inch UHD TV comes with resolution of more than 8 million pixels, quadrupling those found in a standard 1,080-pixel set. Samsung says the television has "enhanced dimming technology and a very high contrast ratio," but the company didn't provide specifics on it.
The Consumer Electronics Association, which puts on the Consumer Electronics Show, announced last month that the technology formerly known as 4K will be called "Ultra High Definition (UHD)" going forward. In order to qualify as a UHD set, a television must have a minimum resolution of 3,840 pixels horizontally and 2,160 vertical pixels. The television must also have at least one 4K-capable digital input and display 4K programming natively with no upconverting.
Samsung isn't alone in targeting the UHD market. LG has a television, called the 84LM9600, that delivers UHD resolution. Additional UHD sets from a host of other TV makers are expected to make an appearance at CES.
Still, even with the technology making a big breakthrough at CES this year, UHD television prices aren't expected to come down to consumer-friendly levels anytime soon.
For its part, Samsung hasn't revealed any other specs or pricing on its television. The company will show it off at its CES press conference on January 7 at 2 p.m. PT.
