Time for some colourful language: the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is to appear in new red and gold colours, and very festive they are too.

The new red Note 3 sees the whole leather-look rear swathed in rich scarlet. Meanwhile the rose gold models simply replace the silver trim of the existing black and white models with a subtle champagne colour, similar to the gold hue of the Apple iPhone 5S.

The latest Note phablet was unveiled in September with a suave new look, the slick faux-leather effect back replacing the glossy plastic of previous models. The leatherette look even has distinguished fake stitching.

The Note 3 is noted for its S Pen stylus and split-screen multitasking features, powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor with a 13-megapixel, 4K camera and high definition 5.7-inch screen. It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with an update to version 4.4 KitKat expected in January.

The Galaxy Note 3 costs around £470. Samsung told me it will announce release dates for the new colours "in due course."
