Samsung exec: Surface isn't selling; Windows 8 no improvement

The president of Samsung's memory-chip division describes Windows 8 as "no better than Vista." Oh, and demand for Surface is "lackluster" as well, he says.

A certain panic seems to be fomenting among tech companies.

The old order is dissipating and the new order is, well, disordered.

So the occasional finger gets pointed and noses get disjointed.

The latest little brouhaha involves the seemingly harsh words of Jun Dong-soo, the president of Samsung's memory-chip division.

He seems to believe that Windows 8 really isn't terribly good. Indeed, as The Korea Times has it, he said: "I think the Windows 8 system is no better than the previous Windows Vista platform."

"Better" is always a relative word. Those of a more benign perspective would say that Jun was bemoaning the fact that the global PC market isn't exactly expanding.

However, he then proceeded to impart a hearty kick into the solar plexus of Microsoft's all-dancing Surface.

Posing as a man who does not sit on fences, he said: "MS's rollout of its Windows Surface tablet is seeing lackluster demand."

Has he not heard that Apple is no longer sexy and that all the teeny kids are desperate to get hold of a Surface? Allegedly.

It seems entirely possible that people just don't feel such a great need for PCs, Windows 8 or not. It also seems entirely possible that Samsung, Acer, and others didn't release PCs that were terribly interesting to real people.

But what is increasingly clear is that no one can trust anyone these days.

Does Samsung really want to continue using Windows? Or, indeed, Android? Or might it be time for it to create its own software that is somehow more wonderful -- or at least better than Vista?
