Safari Connectivity after Security Update 2004-09-30

CNET staff

We continue to receive reports of connectivity issues in Safari after applying the 2004-09-30 Security Update (see reports 1 and 2). Though a distinct cause has proved elusive, new reader reports shed some additional light on the issue:

Twisty Faster writes "A week ago I installed Security Update 2004-09-30 on my dual 2 GHz G5 via Software Update, following all the usual recommended safety protocols. Safari instantly began behaving erratically. At first I got the message "Safari can't open the page "x" because it can't find the server "x" ' only once or twice a day. Lately seems to to happen every other time I try to navigate to a new site, although this perception of escalation may just be an emotional response to increasing irritation. A second try usually resolves the issue, but I've retried as many as 5 times before getting through."

This is an issue that has reared its ugly head off and on over the course of several updates over the past months.

Patrick Muldoon adds "In dumping ethernet traffic. it appears to be DNS timeout issues. From the log, it appears to ask a couple of times waiting for the response. Once it tacks my local domain on it gets a response right away (Which is NXDOMAIN). But the packets return from the response a couple seconds later, but by that time Safari has already given up on that request."

If you are experiencing this issue, please let us know.
