Startup problems Some users have reported an inability to startup after installing Safari 4.

Two of my four Macs (both PPC) no-longer boot now after installing Safari 4 beta. (My bad for installing a beta!) While Safari is largely otherwise unproblematic, these two systems now I find can not reboot or coldboot. After the Apple logo it goes to a blue screen and gets stuck. The screen changes hues of blues, but never proceeds into the log-in requester. I've tried everything from repairing disks to fixing permissions, PRAM resets, reset-all-resets in open firmware, and even Applejack to kill caches and VM. Nothing has worked to bring these Macs back up.. Other Power PC users should beware!"

The first recommended procedure, if you are experiencing this issue, is to simply boot in Safe Mode -- accomplished by holding down the Shift key while your Mac is starting up. After the safe boot, restart normally. A number of maintenance tasks are performed during the safe boot, and you might not need to perform any additional troubleshooting. You might receive a message indicating that the update has finished installing after performing the safe boot.

You can also try temporarily disconnecting any USB, FireWire other otherwise-connected external peripherals then re-attempt startup.

Failing the aforementioned, peruse our tutorial titled "Startup fails (particularly after a system or security update); solving." One of the solutions listed there -- including delete specific caches, rooting out problematic kernel extensions, repairing drive damage, and disconnecting external devices -- might prove successful.

Hotmail problems continue As previously reported, some users are experiencing issues with Hotmail under Safari 4. One reader writes:

"As suggested I've managed to access my Hotmail emails by clicking on firefox but cannot send emails. Safari beta 4 is incompatible with hotmail."

In some cases, it appears that switching the user agent to the last official (non-beta) release of Safari can resolve this issue.

Navigate to Preferences>Advanced and choose to show Develop in the menu bar.

Next, login to Hotmail, then go to the Develop menu and choose Safari 3.2.1.
