Rumors: iPad Mini and iPhone 5 coming soon?

An iLounge.com source claims that, along with new iPods, a new iPad Mini with a 7-inch screen is coming soon. Oh, and a new fifth-generation iPhone may arrive early next year. Bunk? Maybe, maybe not.

Is a smaller iPad coming soon? iLounge.com

We're still probably a month or two away from Apple's annual fall iPod unveiling, but the rumor mill has already begun to churn, with iLounge posting a story with the rather sensationalistic title, "Leaked Details On 2010-2011 iPods, iPhone 5, Bumper 2 + iPad mini."

Naturally, there's an anonymous source involved and iLounge suggests we take it all with a grain of salt, because, well, the source's "accuracy level is very high but not perfect." Here are particulars on the alleged leaked details:

  • Apple is set to release three new iPods, including an new iPod Nano, iPod Touch, and a possible replacement for the beleaguered iPod Shuffle that would incorporate a small 1.7-inch touch screen. The source didn't have anything to offer on whether the new iPod Touch will have a built-in camera, but that seems to be the main question of the hour on the Touch front.

  • Once again, rumors of a smaller iPad with a 7-inch screen are surfacing. iLounge's source claims the smaller iPad is "substantially finished and will be ready for announcement either later this year or early in 2011. Apple has been prototyping devices with screens of this size for a long time--quite possibly predating the original iPhone." We always liked the idea of a smaller, cheaper iPad that's more pocket friendly, so we hope this is true. But we're wondering if Apple will do anything this year that might slacken the demand on the current iPad, which continues to sell very well.

  • Due to the antenna issues, Apple may be coming out with a fifth-generation iPhone sooner than many would have anticipated (early 2011). iLounge, like us, is discounting this rumor simply because the iPhone 4 remains in high demand despite all the negative publicity. Of course, while we're spreading rumors, one might postulate that the next-generation iPhone the source mentioned is really the rumored Verizon iPhone . (You see how easy it is to perpetuate rumors).

  • The last rumor isn't all that sexy but probably has the most truth to it; it involves Apple allegedly developing less expensive all-silicone Bumper cases to distribute to consumers as part of its iPhone 4 Case Program.

So, there you have it. Feel free to let us know how real you think these "leaks" are in the comments section.
