Road Trip Pic of the Day, 6/7:What is it?

CNET Road Trip 2010 begins on June 24, but the "picture of the day" challenge is getting a head start. Be the first to identify the picture and you could win a prize.

CNET Road Trip 2010 begins June 24, but that doesn't mean the picture of the day challenge has to wait until then. Daniel Terdiman/CNET

Update (Tuesday, 9:07 a.m.): The answer is Google's giant server facility, known as Project02, in The Dalles, Oregon.

Do you know what's in the above picture, and where it was taken? If so, you could win a prize.

On June 24, I'll be starting my fifth-annual CNET Road Trip project. As during the four previous years, I'll be traveling through a region of the United States and producing a wide variety of feature story and photo packages about some of the best destinations the region has to offer.

Last year, on Road Trip 2009, I covered the Rocky Mountain/Continental Divide region. In 2008, it was the Southeast. On Road Trip 2007, I traveled through the Southwest. And for the initial trip, Road Trip 2006, I explored the Pacific Northwest.

Road Trip 2010 will take me to the Northeast, through Virginia, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.

And like last year, I'll be doing a daily picture of the day challenge, in which I post a photo and the first person to correctly identify it wins a prize. During the trip, I'll be trying to do that every day. But starting Monday, I'll be posting these challenges most weekdays until I depart.

Your challenge, then, is to tell me what this is and where the photograph was taken. The first person to do so will win a prize, and this year I've got a wide variety of giveaways, from video games to books to DVD sets and more. One caveat: No individual can win more than two prizes. You may be able to be first with the answer six times or more--you know who you are--but unfortunately, only two prizes per person. Also, at the end of the trip, I'll be drawing a name from among all the daily challenge winners and giving out something a little more substantial to that person.

So, have at it. To take part in the challenge, e-mail me your answer (at daniel--dot--terdiman--at--cnet--dot--com) with the phrase "picture of the day" in the subject line. Please include the phrase, as it will help me sift your e-mails from everything else I get.

One hint: Since I'm not on the road yet, I'll mainly be selecting images from the four previous Road Trips--though I reserve the right to throw an unrelated curveball or two. So if you want to get a leg up on your competition, spend a little time going through the previous years' packages. Good luck.

On June 24, Geek Gestalt will kick off Road Trip 2010. After driving more than 18,000 miles in the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest, and the Southeast over the past four years, I'll be looking for the best in technology, science, military, nature, aviation, and more throughout the Northeast. If you have a suggestion for someplace to visit, drop me a line. In the meantime, you can follow my preparations for the project on Twitter @GreeterDan and @RoadTrip.
