Ringtone roundup: Akon makes me look like a fool

Each week, CNET tracks the hottest ringtones. Chris Brown tops the list again this week, as Akon makes a hard charge up the charts.

Each week, we track the most popular ringtones.

I should have known better. Last week, I said Akon's "Don't Matter" would jump from 22 into Billboard's top 10 ringtone list. Perhaps I was thinking about Babe Ruth too much, or of Tom Berenger in Major League, but I thought I could call my shot.

Sadly, Akon's "Don't Matter" locked up just the number 16 spot. That's still a good showing for the song, and it's currently No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 list (which measures sales and airplay). But I can't help but be disappointed by the man who's given name is Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam, according to Slate.com.

Chris Brown's "Poppin'" has been on top of this chart since we started tracking ringtones, and this week was no different. This is followed by Rascal Flatts' "What Hurts The Most," Buckcherry's "Crazy B****," and Gym Class Heroes' "Cupid Chokehold."

Despite my protests, 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" remains the fifth-hottest ringtone, and his song "Best Friend" moved to the No. 10 spot.

Check back next week to see if Akon can crack the top 10. You can see the rest of Billboard's list here.
