Ricochet wireless modem: glitch turns on PowerBook unexpectedly

CNET staff
Jim Corrigan discovered an odd USB issue with a Ricochet 128K wireless modem and his FireWire PowerBook: "With the PowerBook and the Ricochet 128K modem both completely shut off, I inserted the modem's USB cable in either USB port 1 or 2 on the PowerBook. If I then plug the modem's AC adapter into the modem with all switches in the off position, the PowerBook will start up - that is with the modem still shut off. Similarly, with or without the AC adapter connected to the modem, and with the PowerBook off, turning the modem on with its physical slide switch, turns the PowerBook on - without even opening the PowerBook lid." He adds, regarding another glitch with this modem: "If the user does not turn the modem on or have it plugged into the USB port before switching the Location Manager settings, they'll end up with a series of error messages starting with 'The connection attempt failed: An unexpected Open Transport error occurred...' A cold restart is necessary to get things working again." On the plus side, when actually using the modem, Jim was very impressed with its performance. Update: Matt Deatherage reminds us that Apple TIL article #58615 states: "Connecting USB devices while the computer is asleep - If you connect or disconnect a USB device while your computer is in sleep, your computer automatically wakes."
