Hundreds of companies around the globe embarking on radio frequency identification (RFID) projects will soon face a shortage of workers proficient in the emerging technology, according to the trade group Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA). The group said on Tuesday that it's teaming up another group, the Association for Automatic Identification and Mobility, to certify people with RFID skills, such as hardware installation and data synching. RFID is a wireless tracking technology that proponents tout as the next big wave in information technology.

"Many companies eager to adopt the technology are beginning to be slowed in their efforts by a scarcity of qualified RFID integrators," CompTIA said in a press release. "As RFID adoption grows in 2005 and beyond, the skills shortage will become ever more pronounced."
