Retrospect and Novell Client conflict; Novell update/patch

CNET staff
Ali Kaylan writes that Novell NetWare Client for Mac OS 5.11 can cause Retrospect 4.0 to crash. "When you log in to a Novell server while Retrospect is running, Retrospect crashes with a Type 2 error. Retrospect can successfully be launched before logging into a NetWare server, or after logging off. However, if you subsequently log into NetWare, Retrospect immediately crashes. It happens every time."

Pat Lee (of Dantz) confirms that "there does appear to be a problem with the Novell Mac client and Retrospect. We have reported the issue to Novell to look into further." He also suggests getting Novell's update/patch for the NetWare Client (mclupd4.bin); it is possible (although not certain) that this prevents the conflict.

As for the patch itself (which has been out for many months), Novell states: "Novell has identified several problems with its NetWare Client for Mac OS 5.11, including a problem for Mac OS 8 users who could not log in using the Chooser, problems with Nubus LAN cards, and some QuarkXPress incompatibilities. To resolve these and other issues, Novell has released the update/patch kit."
