Resolution tip for DVI monitors

Kyle Griffin found that the resolution support of the original Rage 128 card differs based on if the monitor is DVI or VGA. He writes:

"I have a Sawtooth G4 at work with an original Rage128 card. A few weeks ago, I purchased a Sony SDM-M61 16" flat-panel monitor (1280x1024 native resolution) to go with it. I originally connected it using the Sony-supplied VGA-DVI cable, which gave me all the resolutions up to 1280x1024. However, upon connecting it using a DVI-DVI cable, I was only able to go up to 1024x768, losing the major reason I bought this particular display. Sony told me that the Rage128 might not support more than 1024x768 though the DVI connection. ATI told me the Radeon Mac edition would offer me the 1280x1024 resolution. I then borrowed such a Radeon from my home machine, plugged it in via the DVI connection, and was able to get 1280x1024.

For those looking to upgrade their displays, keep in mind that even though the Rage128 will do 1280x1024 or more via the VGA output, it appears the max through the DVI output is a low 1024x768. To use a 16" LCD display, you may also need a new video card to go with it."

Update: Evidently its not just the ADC to DVI connector, but the specific hardware involved. Dean Ibelle writes: "At this moment running a Silicon Graphics flat panel monitor at 1600x1024 with an ADC to DVI connection."
