Report: Google's Mayer moving to new role
Mayer, for years one of the most public faces of Google Search, is reportedly taking on a new role as head of Google's work on location services and local markets.
Google's Marissa Mayer--for years one of the most high-profile faces of the company's search team--is taking on a new role as Google appears to have made other changes to its management structure.
Mayer, currently vice president of search product and user experience at Google, is getting a promotion to Google's operating committee, tasked with overseeing the company's work on location-based services and local markets, according to a report from Bloomberg. However, it's not clear how Google currently organizes its operating committee, given that the company appears to have redesigned its management Web page.
At some point prior to the report regarding Mayer's promotion, Google changed the Web page that lists its named executive officers to significantly reduce the number of names on the page. Where the company once listed an "operating committee" of 16 top executives (cached version of that page which may disappear shortly here), it now lists nine "executive officers": a list on which Mayer does not appear. Likewise, key Googlers such as Susan Wojcicki--whose garage hosted the first iteration of Google--Urs Holze, instrumental in Google's approach to infrastructure, and Omid Kordestani, an adviser to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, no longer appear on that page.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation of Mayer's new role, as well as the discrepancy between the former "operating committee" once listed on its pages and the significance of the new "executive officers" list.
