Recording DVD to DVD-RAM drive: another follow-up

CNET staff
Regarding our previous coverage on using iDVD with DVD-RAM drives, Ben Haylock offers these additional details:

"The method works. I've been doing it for about a year now. However, DVD-RAM is not supported by a the majority of Pismo/Lombard PowerBook drives (see this report from last November for background info).

They also won't work in most DVD players. However, a player with the intercompatibility logo 'DVD Multi' should have success. As per many reports, the DVD Multi spec says that DVD-RAM (12cm, 8cm, with or without cartridge), DVD-R (General/Authoring), and pressed discs are intercompatible with players bearing the mark. The closest I got was a Hiteker (aka Apex) player which can be cracked open and another DVD-ROM drive inserted. So it's possible, then, that someone could install a DVD-RAM compatible DVD-ROM."

Update: A reader claims that the version of iDVD that people are having success with is a Developer release and not the Final release. Brian Peat (who sent the initial report) confirms that he was using this Developer version. The release version appears to have added hardware restrictions.
