Recording DVD movies to DVD-RAM drive: a follow-up

CNET staff
Recently, we posted an item describing how to record movies from iDVD to a DVD-RAM drive. Several readers asked for more clarification, especially as to exactly what type of disc was used. Brian Peat replied:

"I used a DVD-RAM drive with a 2.6 Gig 1 sided DVD-Ram Type II disc. I was just surprised that it worked. I had heard that you could burn movies on DVD-RAM, but until you try it, you never know. I kept the 2 movies to less than a total of 30 min because I figured it would give me an error after it ran out of room otherwise. The biggest benefit is that you can use the larger DVD-RAM carts (4.7 per side with the newer DVD-RAM drives) as a testing ground and not chew up $10 a pop on DVD-R discs. Also, for those of us without a DVD-R drive (who managed to get a copy of iDVD) you can burn DVD movies as long as you know they only work in DVD-RAM drives and most Apple PowerBook DVD-ROM drives (not sure about the iBook, but the TiBook works, and the Lombard and Pismo should work)."
