When Nvidia rolled out its GeForce 8800 cards last month, word was Nvidia wasn't giving the green light to its partners to sell overclocked versions of the cards. Sure enough, the initial batch from the usual suspects ran at stock speeds. There wasn't too much to complain about, however, since these next-gen graphics cards represented far more than a mere speed bump to the core clock and memory. Plus, they were insanely fast on any game you'd care to throw at them. Well, insanely fast isn't fast enough for the good people at XFX. According to I4U News, XFX is close to releasing overclocked versions of the 8800 GTX and 8800 GTS.

XFX is advertising XXX versions of both the flagship GTX and step-down GTS . The XFX GeForce 8800 GTX XXX Edition will ship with the core clock running at 630MHz (up from 575MHz) and its memory dialed up to an even 2.0GHz (from 1.8GHz). The XXX version of the GTS will feature a 550MHz core clock and 1.8GHz memory speeds, up from 500MHz and 1.6GHz, respectively. Neither card is for sale yet, nor does XFX quote anything resembling a price. Hopefully, the overclocked parts won't result in overclocked prices, since a standard GTX card is already going for the princely sum of $600.
