Raspberry Pi to get camera add-on by October
The 5-megapixel camera module for the cheap credit card-size Linux computer is expected to cost between $20 and $25.
If you're one of the 200,000 owners of the ultra-low-cost Raspberry Pi computer, you'll soon be able to buy a camera add-on.
The tiny 5-megapixel camera module attaches to the Raspberry Pi via a ribbon cable and is expected to cost between $20 and $25. Founder Eben Upton revealed this information at the Raspberry Jam event in Cambridge, England.
He also mentioned that the Raspberry Pi Foundation -- a British nonprofit formed to create this tiny and cheap Linux computer for kids -- has been working on improving the software for the computer. According to Upton, there has been a "fourfold" increase in performance since April.
When the Pi Raspberry Pi launched earlier this year, the spike in traffic brought down the Web site. There's apparently still a backlog despite a production rate of 4,000 sets a day. The foundation hopes to sell a million units by the end of the year.
Raspberry Pi can be ordered online from RS Components -- the company ships worldwide for around $8. The foundation also has a quick-start guide here, though you'll be able to get tips and other useful information in the forums.
