EUREKA, Calif.--So there I was Thursday, making my way slowly north from San Francisco toward Arcata, Calif., to meet up with Duane Flatmo at his Arcata Kinetic Lab.

My goal: to have the trip, the first leg of my two-week Road Trip 2006, take exactly the same amount of time it would take to listen to all the songs I bought from the iTunes Music Store and had downloaded onto my video iPod.

This was a drive of just over 300 miles, and I did take a fairly long detour to the Pacific coast instead of going the most direct way.

Road Trip 2006

The songs began to pour out of my speakers (and I'm exposing a little bit about myself here by telling you the artists whose songs I'd purchased): the Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Joan Osborne, Shakira, Pat Benatar, Live, Sublime, Salt-n-Pepa, the Scorpions, Naughty by Nature.

All told, it was 46 songs. And in the end, the songs ran out before I got to my destination. But I blame that on some tourists in a rental car who I was stuck behind for 22 miles on what I'm sure is the the curviest bit of road in California. They would not pull over despite numerous opportunities to do so.

Anyway, the music was great, and a nice collage of the tunes I've listened to since college and that I wanted to reconnect with for this trip.

Now, back to my regular collection of nearly 8,000 songs. I think that'll get me through a lot of miles.
