QuickTime Streaming Server RTSP stream incompatible with RealPlayer

CNET staff

MacFixIt reader Paul Kurzweil reports that QuickTime Streaming Server's RTSP (real time streaming protocol) stream is incompatible with Real Player, both for Mac and Windows clients. He writes:

"Real Player will load the stream up to 99% and then just jump back to zero and start loading again.

"This problem is only with QTSS Media Playlists, which is AAC (MP4) format. The problem does not happen with the MP3 stream, which is a separate playlist.

"This issue has been verified by clients running Real Player under OS9, OSX, Windows 98, and Windows 2000, being served by QTSS 5.0 (included with OSX Server 10.3.x).

"Since many computers with Real installed have been auto-configured at install to use Real Player to handle .sdp format streams, this issue is quite serious for those using OSX Server and QTSS Publisher."
