QuickTime Exchange file name suffix feature: readers reply

CNET staff
Regarding the feature of QuickTime 3.0 that alters the file type and creator, based on the suffix of the file name (as posted here last time), many readers would just as soon not have this "benefit." For example, Erik Ellestad writes: "We have many users who create files on SGIs with SoftImage and then copy them to them Macs. The extension for this type of file is *.pic. Quick Time Exchange automatically assumes these files are Macintosh PICT format and refuses to allow the finder to open them with anything other than SimpleText. Even if you try to open these files from within an application (say Debabelizer) the Finder convinces the application that the file is a PICT, and it will not open properly. The only way we could find to get around this problem was to disable QuickTime Exchange."
