Video playback problems -- more solutions An inability to properly playback videos continues to be the biggest problem facing users who upgrade to QuickTime 7.4. As previously reported, some movies play without video, others play without sound, and still others don't play at all. Two of the latest, typical reports:

  • "Having all the same issues with QuickTime 7.4 mot playing mp4 video. Movie Properties for video track show, for example, 0x240 when it should be 320x240... Some older mp4 movies ARE playing, though." -- Brett
  • "In my case it's only videos in Safari, that don't play. In some cases I hear the sound but see no pictures. Trying the same Web page in Firefox is working fine. I reinstalled QuickTime - but the issue still occurs." -- Yockey

And, two of the latest fixes:

Make sure plug-ins are enabled It appears that, for some reason, Safari plug-ins are erroneously disabled by the QuickTime 7.4 update, disallowing the playback of Web-page-embedded QuickTime content. In Safari, go to the "Safari" menu and select "Preferences." Click on the "Security" tab and make sure that the box next to "Enable plug-ins" is checked.

MacFixIt reader Bob writes:

"I was having trouble viewing movies with Safari even on the Apple site.  I don't know if QuickTime 7.4 really caused the issue but in looking around I found that in preferences the Enable plug-ins was no longer checked.  I can promise you that I did not uncheck that box."

Reapply latest Mac OS X update In some cases, reapplying the latest Mac OS X updater (try the delta updater first, then the combo updater if that fails) can resolve this issue. You can grab these updates from Apple's download page.

MacFixit reader Skip Via writes:

"MacBook Pro 2.33, 3 GB; QuickTime 7.4 broke playback of many videos (including those on Apple's site). Suggested fixes did not work until I reapplied the standalone 10.5.1 update. Now all is fine."

Final Cut Pro crashes Meanwhile, some users are reporting Final Cut Pro crashes after applying the 7.4 update. One reader writes:

"QuickTime 7.4 is creating a fatal issue in Final Cut Pro. Cannot start the program, says that there is a QuickTime issue."
