Users are reporting a few substantial issues with the QuickTime 7.1 update, released yesterday.

Loss of audio playback Several readers report an issue where they are no longer able to playback audio in MP3s or movies in the QuickTime Player applications after applying the 7.1 update.

One reader writes:

"I cannot play MP3s or any movies now and have any sound come out of them after updating to QuickTime 7.1.

MacFixIt reader Phil adds:

"I have just installed QuickTime 7.1 on my MacBook Pro and, guess what? I now get no sound when playing QuickTime clips."

Problems with embedded Web media: Try removing plug-in Several readers have also reported an issue where embedded QuickTime content on Web pages will not play properly after the update.

In some cases, the solution to this issue is to remove the following file (a plug-in dependent on the VLC multimedia player):

  • /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/VLC Plugin.plugin

then restart the afflicted browser.

iChat issues Some readers report problems with video conferencing in iChat after applying the update.

MacFixIt reader Marc Smith writes:

"After upgrading, iChat will not video connect - One to one. Error is: "There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference. Detected 48 kbps upstream and 162 kbps downstream bandwidth; 50 kbps required."

"iChat is not properly detecting upstream rate - Same with downstream rate. I'm on ADSL and everything worked fine just before the upgrade."
