Problems playing embedded media Some users have reported problems playing embedded media in Web browsers -- particularly Safari -- after updating to QuickTime 7.1.2.

This problem is typified by a black box appearing instead of the expected media, with the message "(no picture)," or a faded QuickTime logo with a question mark in the center.

One reader writes:

"I installed the Mac OS X 10.4.7 and QuickTime 7.1.2 updates last night on my 800 MHz iBook G4. After restarting, quicktime apparently fails to function in the case of Apple's home page."

Another reader adds:

"I'm having trouble after the install of QuickTime 7.1.2 on my MacBook Pro running 10.4.7. Safari used to work fine but now all I get are QuickTime logos with question marks."

If you are having problems viewing QuickTime media embedded in Web pages, look in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins directory (this is the Library folder at the root level of your hard drive, not the one inside your home user directory). Try removing the following files from that directory:

  • QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
  • VLC Plugin.plugin

Finder preview playback issues Meanwhile, some users report problems with Finder previews of QuickTime media after the update. MacFixIt reader Paul Impola writes:

"Since installing the update, I have an irritating Finder bug. Whenever I try to display previews of some .mpg files in Finder column view, the Finder crashes."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

Dual-screen issues One reader reports an issue with maximizing QuickTime content on a secondary screen:

MacFixIt reader Dennis writes:

"After I updated to Quicktime 7.1.2 I have an issue with maximizing on my second screen it worked fine before the update and now when I try to maximize on my second screen the window in the quicktime player goes white as soon as I start to minimize back down using the bottom corner it goes back to normal and plays properly."
