QuickTime 5.0.1: Sorenson 3 codec dropped

CNET staff
Apple has made at least one change between Preview 3 and the QuickTime 5.0.1: it has dropped the Sorenson 3 codec. Judging from our email, more than a few users are unhappy with the change.

John Fowler writes: "I went to play some Sorenson 3-compressed movies, and I received the 'QuickTime is missing the necessary software to play this' message. I looked at the codec list, and sure enough, Sorenson 3 wasn't there. I'm still trying to figure out why they'd make the full version less functional than the beta."

Harry Zink writes: "It is very dismaying to see that Apple has removed the Sorenson 3 codec from the final version of QT 5, even though it was not only present during the entire beta process. Especially since Apple made a big deal out of the superior quality of Sorenson 3. At the very least, they should have provided an explanation as to why it was removed."
