QuickTime 4 beta: bugs and tips

CNET staff
Readers are reporting an assortment of problems with the recently released latest update to QuickTime 4.0 beta (v.b24) - that were not apparent in the previous version. These include an increase in system crashes, a failure of the QuickTime plug-in to work in Netscape Navigator, and playing AVI movies on the Web causing the browser to freeze. It may be best to pass on this beta version and wait for the next one.

A few readers pointed out that Apple System Profiler mistakenly describes this b24 update as b36.

Raul Gutierrez notes: "Using the internal 56K modem that came with my G3/BW, QuickTime 4.0 was not playing sound during streaming video on my machine (video played fine). I reset the QuickTime Settings to a 28.8 connection speed and my problems vanished."
