QuickTime 4.0.x: Out of memory errors

Sound Manager bugs? We have received a small but growing collection of reports of problems with QuickTime 4.0.x. They tend to fall in two categories:

Out of memory errors Andrew Feigenson was getting these in SoundEdit 16 2.0.7. Reverting to an older version of QuickTime fixed it. Robert Eppich got this error when accessing the Desktop Printer Manager Scripting Addition in Mac OS 8.6 - and similarly linked it to his upgrade to QuickTime 4.0.

Sound Manager bugs? The version of Sound Manager extension installed by QuickTime 4.0.x has been linked to an assortment of potential problems, including incorrect sampling rates, complete loss of system sounds (alerts, etc.), and even a system crash. Reverting to an older version of the extension usually eliminates the problem.
