TILs on what's fixed and what still needs fixing Apple TIL article #60310 lists known issues with the current release of the QuickTime 4 Public Beta. The currently released version is 4.0b22. It will be regularly updated. The current problems listed include:
  • The game Starship Titanic may give an error on launch if a Basic or Deluxe installation of QuickTime 4 is used. [Workaround: Use the QuickTime Authoring install option.]
  • System 7 sound files may sound distorted. [Workaround: Export the sound to a different format, such as a QuickTime movie file.]
  • The default amount of memory allocated to a web browser on a Macintosh is often not enough to view streaming movies using the QuickTime 4 plug-in, and can sometimes result in crashes. [Workaround: Increase the amount of memory allocated to to the browser.]
  • Running the installer two or more times in a row can result in an error after startup- "QuickTime Streaming installation failed because there was an error registering the library." [Workaround: Delete QuickTime Extensions folder before installing.]

Apple TIL article #60345 lists problems that are fixed in each beta release of QuickTime 4. For the current release, these include:

  • Fixed a problem where the installer would hang when an application is open that puts up a modal dialog before quitting.
  • Fixed a small memory leak when QuickTime was used to uncompress JPEG images.

CalComp DrawingSlate conflict? Jason Lodas writes: "I've found a conflict between QuickTime 4.0b22 and the CalComp DrawingSlate II Control Panel. When the DrawingSlate Control Panel is active and QT 4.0b22 is installed, my machine locks up every time I try to open a QT movie. When the DrawingSlate Control Panel is turned off, there's no problem." Check Troubleshooting QuickTime 4.0 for more on QuickTime problems.

Update: Ernie Leimkuhler says that he has had no problems with DrawingSlate and QuickTime 4.0. However, he also recommends updating to TabletWorks 5.1, which replaced DrawingSlate. But, as Calcomp has sold off its digitizer-tablet division, you may have trouble finding it.
