Quicken-Discover fix? Ken Hancock has "an unsupported fix" (still in beta) that allows Quicken Mac to support Discover Card downloads. Interested parties should mail hancockks@yahoo.com. [See also this MacFixIt Forums message from Ken, as well as previous coverage of this issue.] HID Library file follow-up Regarding our previous coverage of GameSprockets 1.7.5 and the need (or lack of need) for the HID Library file, see this MacFixIt Forums thread on Game Sprockets 1.7.5 & HID Library Issue. Sherlock auto-changes Roy Hirose writes: "When using Sherlock 2 the other day, I clicked on the People section and saw two of the three available search sites disappear. They were eventually replaced by a new WorldPages.com site listing. Went to Shopping and saw that REI was added to the current sites." We tried it and noticed this is as well. This may have happened awhile ago, as we have not checked these channels recently. In any case, this demonstrates Sherlock's ability to update itself. Epson update comes from Apple? A MacFixIt reader was having problems with unusually slow printing to his Epson 1270, especially for PDF, Illustrator 8 and InDesign documents. For example, a 16k PDF file took about 8-12 minutes to print. She contacted Epson about this and they offered this somewhat surprising (although not very helpful) reply: "The Stylus Driver Updater v1.0BES is an update that has been provided by Apple. EPSON did not create this driver. It has been posted on EPSON's website through Apple." Getting an Apple internal modem if you did not get one with your Mac A reader informs us: "If a user wishes to add an internal modem to the new G4 models, he/she can order Apple part #661-2324. It may be ordered via Apple Authorized Service Provider or through www.PreOwned.com." The internal modem for pre-Summer 2000 G4s is now available from the Apple Store. Sony cameras and G3/BWs Apple's Discussions boards have some threads covering Sony DV cameras not working with Blue-and-White G3 Macs (see one and two). (Thanks, Chris Gauch.). Macintosh Explorer download error fixed Rage Software writes: "An error with our CGI script on our web site caused Macintosh Explorer to get corrupted resulting in the errors [Type 2 errors likely]. This problem has been fixed and Macintosh Explorer should [now download] fine. (Thanks, Peter Wilson.) MacIntstruct discusses "Troubleshooting problems with Macster Preview 5. Modem Puppet Show has been offline for a while. They are "revamping" their collection and hope to have a new version of MPS (Modem Puppet Show 4.0) by September 13. VirusBarrier and QuicKeys conflict Two readers report getting a crash at startup if the VirusBarrier file is in the Control Panels folder. Thomas Lee found it was due to a conflict between VirusBarrier and QuicKeys. AdobePS duplex printing bug The Help With Your Mac site describes a bug in AdobePS 8.7 where, "if you have duplex printing on, but only print one page the printer prints to page 2. This is a problem if you're printing labels or envelopes. With labels you run the chance of gumming up the printer by running the page through the heat element twice." Virtual memory and disk errors Robert Yaccarino kept getting "disk error" messages with his new G4 MP 450 MHz when copying a large number (e.g., about 1200) of small files to his internal Zip drive. Turning virtual memory on (even to just its minimum 1 MB size) eliminated the problem. [Note: This is the latest< variation of a recurring problem; see this previous item.] Voodoo5 and Finder crashes Shun Koizumi was getting Finder crashes that he linked to his Voodoo5 card. He finally found that "the system only locks up when running at 1152x870 resolution. Runs fine at 1024x768 and 1280x960." Macally keyboards and MacsBug Peter Galko found that the Macally USB extended keyboard does not work with MacsBug. The problem is that nothing typed on the keyboard is seen by MacsBug. He reported this to Macally tech support and they replied: "MacsBug does not support 3rd party keyboards. We have no fix at this time." [See also previous coverage.] PacBell DSL: Mac vs. PC costs differ Mark Mason informs us that, while PacBell will install their DSL home service for free for PC users, even including a PC if you do not have one, they charge $179 to install the service for a Mac.
