Quicken 2002: CarbonLib issues; opening data files; incorrect portfolio prices; installer issues; more

We have several items today from readers describing issues with the latest release of Quicken.

CarbonLib issues Quicken 2002 requires, and will install, CarbonLib 1.3.1. However, 1.3.1 has caused more than a few problems for many users. Often, users had reverted to CarbonLib 1.2.5 to avoid a number of issues, an option no longer available to Quicken 2002 users. (See previous CarbonLib coverage.) One solution that will probably work for a fair number of users is CarbonLib 1.4. Bob Wilson writes: "Upgrading to CarbonLib 1.4 fixed the problems I had previously encountered with 1.3.1, and it seems to work fine with Quicken 2002 as well." Note: Given the complexity of issues surrounding the different versions of CarbonLib, we don't expect 1.4 to be a magic bullet that solves every problem.

Unable to open files via an alias Harvey Rubinstein writes: "For years I used to launch Quicken data files from a folder in the Apple menu which contained the aliases of my data files. Since installing Quicken 2002 version, the aliases only work after the file has first been opened via the application itself. Otherwise, I get the following error message: 'The Quicken document XXXX could not be opened, because it cannot be used with this version of the Mac OS or there is a problem with it. If there is a problem with it, try reinstalling the package.' This identical problem occurs on both my Macs, which use Mac OS 9.1.

Update: Kirby Schrader writes: This problem can be fixed easily by rebuilding the desktop. I had the same problem and all is well after a desktop rebuild.

Update: Harvey Rubinstein adds: "While I am pleased to see that Kirby Schrader solved the issue by rebuilding the Desktop, this has not worked for me. I also tried to report the suspected bug to Intuit, but their bug reporting links do not yet include Q2002 Mac. So I submitted it on the next best option-Quicken 2000 Mac.

Next, I contacted on-line/chat support. The short answer: 'At this time we are supporting Quicken 2002, 2001 and 2000 for Windows issues only. If you require assistance on a previous version of Quicken or for any other Intuit product please see our support options at Intuit Support Options. Thank you for your interest in the LivePerson Chat.'"

Another reader adds: "I made an alias of the whole Quicken folder and put it on the desktop. A little ponderous, but it works."

Incorrect or missing prices in portfolio accounts Anton Rang writes: "After upgrading from Quicken Deluxe 2001 to Quicken Deluxe 2002, I discovered that some of my portfolio accounts showed incorrect or missing prices. After some investigation, I discovered the cause of the problem and how to work around it. The securities for which prices were lost were those which did not have an associated stock symbol. I returned to my backup, and used Q2001 to add a fake stock symbol (containing the character ~ so they would not conflict with any real ones) to each security which didn't already have one. Finally, I copied the Quicken Quotes file inside the Quicken Essentials folder of the Q2001 folder to the Essentials folder of the Q2002 folder, and opened the updated data file using Q2002. My prices were then intact."

Can't move application Christian Meenaghan writes: "Moving Quicken 2002 out of the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder caused Quicken to quit on launch with a Type 3 error." However, Lee Roos has Quicken in a folder called "Finances" and it runs fine from there.

Installer won't run under X? Geoff Bonnin writes: "The installer crashes immediately when you run it under OSX. This can fixed by specifying that it run in Classic in the OS X Show Info window."

Update: Glenn Kukla adds this item on Tax Planner issues. He writes:

Tax Planner numbers transposed "In the Tax Planner, long and short term capital gains are reversed (long becomes short, and short becomes long). These figures are correct in reports, but not in the planner -- it must be grabbing data from the wrong cells. This error has existed in the past two versions and has not yet been corrected. Also, after manually adjusting the long and short term gains in the Tax Planner, the tax due amount doesn't change. Apparently, both are being incorrectly taxed at the same rate."
