Que! CD-RW drives: more problem reports

CNET staff
We continue to get email on< various problems burning CDs with Que! CD-RW drives (see yesterday's item).

FireWire Two readers (Paul Conway and Paul Mirkovich) point to problems with Que! 8x4x32 FireWire CD-RW drives that are similar to the one reported yesterday for the Que! 12X drive. In this case, problems are caused by some units having a Samsung mechanism rather than the Plextor. Symptoms include the inability of Retrospect to work with the drive and distortion in burned audio CDs. According to Paul Mirkovich, Roxio has indicated that the Samsung unit is not compatible with Toast 4.1.2 but only with 4.0.

On a positive note, Stefan Geens found that, despite his Que! CD-RW (with the TEAC mechanism) giving the same failure to finish errors described here yesterday, the CDs actually worked fine when he attempted to play them.

USB Based on this review, QPS's problems may extend to Que! USB CD-RW drives.

Update: Increasing Toast's memory to 10285K, as recommended in the manual, solved the problems Gerald Tishman was having burning discs on the USB drive.
