QuarkXpress (various versions): Fix for problems launching

CNET staff

We previously reported extensively on issues launching QuarkXpress. In many cases, these issues are due to problems with problematic validation numbers.

In other cases, however, the problem can be due to the lack of a folder named Preferences within the Quark folder (located in /Applications). The solution is to simply re-create the folder as follows:

  1. Navigate to the /Applications directory and open your Quark folder (QuarkXpress 6.5, QuarkXpress 7.0, etc.)
  2. Go to the File menu and select "New folder"
  3. Name the new folder Preferences.
  4. Re-attempt launching QuarkXpress

Although it is not clear why this folder becomes deleted, QuarkXpress needs it to launch properly.

MacFixIt reader Steve Schwartz writes:

"After adding this folder Quark started right away upon the next try and populated the folder with a variety of preference files.  The rep said that the Quark preferences had most likely gotten corrupt causing the folder to disappear. What's amazing to me is that Quark isn't smart enough to create a missing preference folder on it's own. I also noticed during this process that the Quark upgrade install disk does not have an 'uninstall' option so we had to move the old Quark folder elsewhere in order to reinstall it.  Just another day in the life of a Quark user."
