QuarkXPress 6.1 Network File Corruption

Several readers report that QuarkXpress 6.1 will corrupt some older documents when saved over the network. The results of the file corruption can include missing images and text, blank box elements and more.

Files affected include documents created in QuarkXPress version 4.x or 5.x being re-saved by QuarkXPress 6.1 over network using AFP (Apple File Protocol).

MacFixIt reader Jason Wohlford writes "This doesn't seem to affect all older files, but nonetheless happens frequently enough to be a serious issue. I've tested this on network volumes hosted on another Mac running 10.3.4 and on Windows 2000 Server SP4 with SFM (Services for Macintosh). This problem does not occur with QuarkXPress 6.0.

"I have two older QuarkXPress docs on hand that will corrupt 100% of the time when saving over the network using QuarkXPress 6.1. I can't find this issue listed on Quark's website and its very hard to find elsewhere on the Internet. Thanks to MacFixIt for providing the only insight I could find. "I'm recommending to all users in my company who are affected by this issue to use QuarkXPress 6.0 as the default, with QuarkXpress 6.1 also available. I've place a backup of compressed packages of QuarkXPress 6.0 and QuarkXPress 6.1 on our internal server. Once unstuffed they should replace existing QuarkXPress folders in the 'Applications' folder. The QuarkXPress 6.1 icon has been changed to reflect its nature and to help distinguish between 6.0 and 6.1. Also, to help prevent accidentally use of QuarkXPress 6.1 try these steps. Once both apps are installed, select a QuarkXPress document and choose File -> Get Info. In the "Open with" section change the default application to QuarkXPress 6.0."

We previously reported a variation of this issue.
