Looking to gain a foothold in the rapidly expanding Microsoft Windows NT high-availability market, the Qualix Group acquired failover specialist Octopus Technologies.

The acquisition expands Qualix's traditional focus, where it specializes in software tools that provide security, fault-tolerance, and high-availability for Unix machines, to Windows NT. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Both vendors are privately owned.

Octopus has recently seen interest from hardware vendors in its Automatic Switch Over technology, which allows one system or set of disks to failover to a secondary box across a local area network or wide area network.

Intergraph Computer Systems recently licensed the technology for its entire Windows NT server line.
